Well, I may be getting further off topic but I thought this was an interesting observation...

Johhny2Bad: <em>The facts: currently hardware is being designed around software when software should be designed around hardware hence the illusion that the OS is boss, but thats half the problem because what we actually have is many manufacturers of hardware AND software hence incompatibility issues which leads to crashing/freezing systems, to solve the problem of incompatibility we have to limit ourselves to one hardware manufacturer and as many OS platforms as u like or vice versa (one OS manufacturer and as many hardware manufacturers as u like) hence the battle for dominance.</em>

This is true and rarely if ever considered by the average computer user. Back in the days before the Windows PC, computers were very hardware specific and the operating system was specific to the chip... A z80 computer used a different disk operating system than an 8080 or an 8085. Commodore 64's used an OS from Commodore which would work as well on my Commodore 64 as yours because the hardware and software came from the same place.

I think this is something that Apple has considers with their hardware/software products although there are casualties along the way when various hardware pieces become outdated because the OS requires something that is only supported in the new hardware. Mac OS worked up to OS9 with their Power PC G3/G4 products but G3's ran slow and spotty on anything greater than OS8. The latest OSX is spec'd to work with G4 & G5 computers but to get the most out of it, you better have a dual core Intel system with a whack load of ram. In this way, Apple can ensure that the hardware & software have less trouble than if their OS ran on some generic hardware. That said, I'd still like to hack OSX and run it on my Toshiba Laptop :)

Sorry for going so way off topic but I thought that was an interesting point.

as for calling people with differing opinions stupid, whose opinion have i said is stupid and who have i called stupid (unless asking or insinuating the possibility that someone may be stupid is actually calling them stupid), i've catergorised certain computer users as stupid in a round about way but like i said.. who the cap fits let them wear it.

rude and condescending... again the name says it all, and if u read my posts properly i said i dont have time to baby people and once again u've shown how silly u are, no i never purposely left out 4 bits but if u read properly i go on to say and i quote
"am i being stupid… yes i am"
so im admiting to being silly about the 4 missing bits and then i go on to say, and i quote
"but heres why, because your comment in no why refutes the point i was making so i might as well be as silly about it as u trying to highlight a possible error on my part"
do u get it now.

@Johhny2Bad Don't flatter yourself.

They didn't want to engage with you because you're incapable of having a discussion without being rude, condescending, calling people with differing opinions stupid, fabricating "facts" on the fly, etc... I mean to spin that you purposely left out 4 bits as bait. That's just weak.

So, when you find that people don't respond to your posts you might think that you're clever however, it probably means that they have better things to do and just don't want to invest.

Peace out!

so in all i've written thats all u could find, because its not 16bits long does it mean its not a 16bit representation with 4bits missing.... am i being stupid... yes i am but heres why, because your comment in no why refutes the point i was making so i might as well be as silly about it as u trying to highlight a possible error on my part, if u had tried to be a little clever u might have seen that it wasn't an error as you thought but an inactive point inside the original point that u have just allowed me to demonstrate. Its call bait and u took it and made my point even clearer... not feeling so clever now huh?

u said "I’m surprised nobody else called you on your 16bit"

they where obviously smart enough to see the bait.

Wow... Touchy and Rude to boot.

I'm surprised nobody else called you on your 16bit, I'm a low level coder and I know binary rubbish. It could be a collection of 4 bit instructions, it could be an 8 bit operator and a 4 bit operand or a 4 bit operator and an 8 bit operand or it could be a 12 bit instruction... It could be anything but it isn't 16 bits long.

Now I wasn't actually trying to rattle your cage but I guess I did.

Awasson! are u trying to rattle my cage or are u just plain stupid trying to play clever, if this is your way of trying to get one up then all u have proven is u can count... i noticed you never called it a 12bit representation but 12bits, whys that awasson?

Well I had to look at the ads again to see why anyone would be offended and I'm still scratching my head... They're entertaining, yet there is a ring of truth to it.

Vista is a troubled operating system. I've given it the old college try several times and even fully patched the Sony Viao dual core with Vista doesn't feel as responsive as my AMD64 with XP SP3. They both have 2GIG's of RAM but the Sony should blow circles around the AMD... It doesn't and all I see from Microsoft is propaganda about why Vista is the #1 choice or how Vista's adoption rate is higher than all OS's combined.

On the other hand we have several Macs in the office. The latest 24 inch (Imac) running Leopard has 4GIG's RAM, picked up our wireless network, printer, internet, filesharing, etc... without a glitch. I had the pleasure of setting it up and when I had to go back to my workstation to check some settings I was a little let down with the visuals that my XP workstation possesses. I've got a Radeon 9550 with a pair of Samsung SyncMaster 206BW displays, which might not give me good gaming performance but should be more than enough to write code and develop websites yet the system lacks the sparkle that the Mac naturally possesses. OSX is Unix (FreeBSD) which gives it a rugged foundation but it's the Quartz display layer that really makes it shine.

I often have to use Windows to develop on but I'm getting to the point where I may pick up a 24" Imac, load it up with Ram and virtualize XP on it so I can run Visual Studio. I have an Ubuntu workstation with XP running in Virtual Box and it's fantastic in this configuration. It may just be a matter of time until I start treating XP or Vista as just another application I run on my workstation.

One last thing.... 000100101000 isn't a 16 bit representation of anything. It's 12 bits.

I would first like to say I have not had any experience with macs since 2002. I used a mac briefly while on business in the UK and was able to check my email at a mac setup in a cafe. I remember the mac locking up many times over a two week period just checking my email. Needless to say I got a bad taste in my mouth for macs, but I do recognize that it was a public computer. In my current profession I am given windows laptops, desktops and all the windows software for virtually nothing. This free software enables me to learn new programming technologies to keep my career successful. I have not used Vista in any great lengths and do not intend to because XP is running great for me. I am very comfortable with everything related to XP and Windows Server 2003 and have no need to get a mac unless someone gave one to me. I would never bash the mac because they may be great products, but they do not fit into my needs. I have dealt with windows problems and I am sure macs have their own problems, but overall I do not have any big issues with XP pc's. For the typical home user that does not program in microsoft technologies and has a lot of extra cash to spend on the initial cost and expensive software, the mac may be a better fit.

I have dealt with windows problems and I am sure macs have their own problems, but overall I do not have any big issues with XP pc’s. For the typical home user that does not program in microsoft technologies and has a lot of extra cash to spend on the initial cost and expensive software, the mac may be a better fit.

most of the mac ads are funny... a little elitist but mostly funny. these new ones are ridiculously hypocritical. apple spends so much on advertising to consumers. i am not one to be offended but it just really rubbed me the wrong way. and i like macs. i am using one right now. apple really should stick to the facts and not do negative ads. one more thing... apple should be spending more money on r&d. i manage a fleet of mac laptops for my company and we have a host of hardware (not software) problems including cracked cases, bad latches, frayed power cords, misaligned cases, bad lcds, discolored cases, etc...

"johnny2bad sounds insulting and alot like someone who burned out - not much room for innovation and fresh perspectives with that kind of outlook."

thens says

"I prefer Mac. Period."

I have to put up with this kind of errm.... "contradiction" everyday but hey who the cap fits let them wear it, and if u take offence then obviously the cap fits. i've no time to baby people, thats why this ms vs mac argument persists.
The facts: currently hardware is being designed around software when software should be designed around hardware hence the illusion that the OS is boss, but thats half the problem because what we actually have is many manufacturers of hardware AND software hence incompatibility issues which leads to crashing/freezing systems, to solve the problem of incompatibility we have to limit ourselves to one hardware manufacturer and as many OS platforms as u like or vice versa (one OS manufacturer and as many hardware manufacturers as u like) hence the battle for dominance. What Mac are doing to try and solve this problem is screen the hardware that they use hence the limited availability of hardware for mac systems, by doing this they limit the potential for crashes and therefore the OS is cleaner then MS but at the expense of limiting choice of hardware and upgradeability. MS on the other have a more open system hence wider availability of hardware but at the expense of potential incompatibility issues which makes there OS appear to be prone to crashing. As a business what stance would u take because the only argument we as users should be having is do we want to limit hardware choice or OS choice and i know what side of the fence i stand on, i'd rather see more hardware and less OS's because i overstand that the OS is just an interface between the hardware and the software and the software is the interface between the human user and the hardware via a operating system. So in truth the OS is nothing and will soon disappear when embedded software takes hold because then there will be no need for an OS as the hardware will have the software onboard. so your not only pointlessly arguing about who is best but your actually hindering the progress of computer technology. Let the embedded software revolution begin and forget about the soon to be obsolete OS and watch as computers get faster, more powerful and simply easier to use. PS a bit of humorous sarcasm now... so what was u saying about my outlook????

I use a pc (vista and Kubuntu) and love those commercials, But just labeling it a pc is misleading, isn't a Mac a personal computer, pc.

I would really like to see a penguin in a Mac commercial to make it fair. Kubuntu is straight forward and would give both OS's a run for the money, or lack of it for the penguin.

<blockquote>“Try converting your Microsoft Word Documents to PDF WITHOUT having to purchase extra software and in two clicks.”</blockquote>

<a href="http://pdfforge.org/" rel="nofollow">http://pdfforge.org/</a>

Its free, I use it all the time.

Cheers

I have better things to do than argue this point. If you want Windows go for it more power to you. If you base what you buy on a commercial thats a vulnerability best discussed with a shrink. I prefer Mac. Period. Good day all. Lighten up people.

Why are some people so easily offended by everything?! Take it with a grain of salt!

I have never made a purchase (or voted for a candidate for that matter) based on a TV commercial. Evidently, some of you have. If you base your decisions on TV commercials, or if your personal psyche is affected by them, you need help.

I have Macs running MS Office and VirtualPC with Windows XP. I use the best of all products. I could care less how 'evil' either Microsoft or Apple is, as long as their products work for what I need to get done!

<em>"Try converting your Microsoft Word Documents to PDF WITHOUT having to purchase extra software and in two clicks."</em>
Like when I click print and select "Print to PDF"? It does require additional software but you do not have to pay for it, and I mean because its freeware not because I use a key generator. I have used multiple PDF printers that are free and work great. Including ones that let you encrypt and password protect the new PDF.
<em>
"Try making screenshots with the click of one button"</em>
Are you referring to the "Print Screen" button? It's a one click screen shot. Does MAC handle this in a better way?

i write what i write for people like those who think their mac is not a PC and thinks that a broadcast which only questioned another companies budget and spending policy is an advert; i also didnt know that budgets and spending policies where flaws in a PC samanime, so the irrelevancy is not in my text but in the irrelevant broadcast disguised as an advert being discussed just because most computer users think that the OS is the all and everything. Point in case: if the arguments between mac and ms users was not so prevailant then this advert would not even have been created let alone thought of and guess what, the mac vs ms argument is just as irrelevant to computing as this advert was whilst the text i wrote was completely relevant because it highlights why such ads are being made and will continue to be made.

Oh and by the way, i use linux for my servers and research systems because of its modular design which allows me to maximise system resources by only installing what i need from a bare shell, i use windows for its ease of use, software and hardware availibilty/compatibility and upgradeability and i use mac once in a while because some of my clients do, i'm not a mac/windows hater/lover because i always try to use the best tools for the job at hand and sometimes that means not using windows, mac or linux.

Thanks Bfrancis and Bonzo for confirming my point exactly, how can one system produce an error whilst another doesn't... its not the OS its the combination of components and system configurations, most people buy off the shelf computers where components are thrown together based on specs as opposed to compatibility, i.e throw in all the highest specs and call it an intense gaming machine, minimise the specs and call it a word processor. Burned out is definately not the case Letica and while most people argue about whose best we lose out on real innovation because everyone thinks its the OS that makes the computer and while that is the case the OS is where the money will be invested, hence innovation is hindered because the OS is only as good as the system it runs in so **** the OS's and bring me some real innovative components and devices to wet my appetite for technology and if you want innovation then maybe you should read the documents and frameworks i developed based on the concept of single solution software and hardware. And bonzo, any software developer will tell you they cannot test there software on every component in the market now or in the future so they tend to select a few systems and run the benchmarks on those systems, i could probably build u a million and one computers with exactly the same specs but different manufacturers of the components inside and whats the bet they don't all run exactly the same. And finally... Mac is better at desktop publishing then Windows???? thats one of the oldest mac arguments but the bottom line is i bet u i can build a windows system for image rendering that will blow your Mac away... and vice versa why, because i know it is not the OS that makes the computer the OS is an interface that allows the user to interact with the computer without having to have knowledge of binary code, low level languages such as assembly or high level languages such as Java in order to use the computer.. hell programming languages where developed because writing code in binary took for ever so by interfacing binary to create higher level languages meant that not only could you write programmes with less code but you could write them in english instead of zeros and ones it also allowed for easier collaboration on big projects i.e can you tell me what this piece of binary represents 000100101000, is it a 16 bit representation or is a 4 bit representation and what does it represent, guess what? you can't give me an answer because it could represent anything and without knowing the system im using to represent real data your gonna have a hard time trying to figure it out.

I think they are good fanboy fodder -- you get that through the comments above -- but do they do a good job at trying to convert a non-Mac user into a Mac User?

I doubt it.

Seems like a tactic more likely to harden a potential customer against Mac than covert them.
