Has anyone won the youbethevc contest? It ended months ago, but I haven't seen any launches or blogs from the winners. It looks like after the contest, nothing happened.

One look at officesnapshot.com shows what startups are spending their funding on....expensive useless furniture and chic office gear.

Don't get me wrong, I think this stuff is just as cool as the next guy, but I do get the feeling that these people are worried too much about the image they project and not about the work they do.

You can do a startup in your house/apartment, with nothing but late nights and lots of caffeine. You don't have to run out to IKEA and buy colorful furniture and a pingpong table, you're not Google, not yet anyway.

Did you try sbcalliance.com yet? Banks have locked their vaults and thrown away the keys. It is virtually impossible to get a traditional loan through a bank in 'this' economy so don't waste your time. And, just as bad if you try to get a line of credit from a bank. The only resource I know of is sbc. And, no, I'm not an affiliate. Hope that helps.

I would suggest another source of funding, at least partial, could be in the form of a state or federal government grant. I was on the phone to a government export department here in Oz yesterday and learned, quite to my surprise, that they offer a dollar-for-dollar grant to assist with marketing, which I suggest would/should be a significant portion of any web start-up budget.

I sometimes wonder what startups spend funding on.

With the barrier to entry for software development so low now (basically zero if you choose the right platform), I imagine it mostly goes on wages for your self or others; and marketing costs.
