@Nate

“can” MEANS possibly

I think I have to agree with you. After I re-read my post I realized I didn't want to be as negative as I came off. I just wanted to point out the other posts I came across that talk about some of the realities of 1,000 true fans.

Josh certainly had some great info in there about the usb keys and such.

This was an interesting article. I like the use of Reznor because he is a little more well known to people. Technology has completely changed the way people do business in the music industry. In order to stay relevant, Reznor continually changes the way his product is marketed while keeping the quality high. This holds the interest of the fans that like his material. It also keeps a constant revenue stream coming in. He hasn't had a major hit in along time but doesn't need to with the strategy he uses. This strategy can be used in other industries, not just music.

@Sonicville.ning:
Replace the word “can” with “can possibly”.

While I agree with your sentiment, I think Josh did a fine job of explaining that there are some special circumstances at play here. Saying "can possibly" is just redundant - "can" MEANS possibly. He didn't say Reznor's blueprint WILL work for everyone.

this is great. but you have to consider this ... the traditional approach is what built NIN. so for joe guitar player in a local band to follow trent's (pretty awesome) ideas ... well ... your mileage may vary as they say. but established bands with contracts expiring should strongly consider what he's doing here.

The lesson here, though, is that Reznor’s blueprint can work for any content creators that exist in the long tail.

This is an erroneous statement. Replace the word "can" with "can possibly". I don't think it is entirely appropriate to use a major label act to demonstrate the 1000 true fans theory.

To be fair, the reality of 1000 true fans should be mentioned.

And also one artists experience of 1000 true fans - to get the entire picture.

Oddly enough, we just started this same discussion yesterday in the business group on our music site.
