Maxine - I think that organic story spreading you were mentioning about the WSG mailing list is now called Twitter - well at least for me. Its how I stay in touch with what people are doing in the web 2.0 space and I am glad that there are a number of people working in departments across Canberra and others that are now part of the community and sharing experiences. Nathanael being no small part of that. cheers

Thanks for this very comprehensive write up Nathaniel. I spoke further to people who attended Grant Young's Social Media and Government workshop the next day, where the refrain was similar. I'd love to be part of fostering these changes in government here in Australia, but I'm just not sure what it's possible to do "as an outsider".

I keep on coming back to this idea that what might work is something akin to what the old Web Standards Group mailing list, and for that matter, meet ups, was like: a place where ideas and success stories could be spread organically, among people who wanted to make changes, but who did not work in the same organisation. The kind of knowledge sharing that goes on in a loose organisation like that could really make a difference.

Beyond that, we'd love to put on this event next year, and would love to pack the stage with speakers talking about Australian government projects they have been involved with that have really worked, and how they made that happen in their organisation - so bring it on!
