I don’t understand why AIR was developed to need a runtime at all? Why doesn’t it compile to a native app?

I believe this is to that it will be cross-os as long as the os as the runtime installed.

I wonder if Adobe made the acronym A.I.R. because it is R.I.A. backwards.

Thanks for your post. I didn't realize AIR could be that simple. It reminds me of Sidewinder. What do you think of AIR versus Sidewinder, other than the obvious fact that Adobe is much better known than x-port.net?

Hi Anonymous. I chose to compare them because they can be both used to solve a specific problem, even though AIR can clearly do much more. SSBs like Prism can be viewed as an introduction to apps that fall somewhere between the Web and the desktop. AIR just takes it to a whole new level. XULRunner is indeed similar, but I find AIR more interesting given the flexibility it offers developers in their choice of technology. The progression seems pretty natural to me.

I dont see how you can compare prism with air. (prism being a sbs and air being an integrated runtime) you should be comparing air with xulrunner.

Also from Jonathan Snook... He's released a "simple" sample application for people to learn the ins-and-outs of Air development: Snoto Photo. Thanks, Jonathan!

Adobe AIR is indeed fascinating and gives the web developers a lot of opportunities. http://24ways.org/2007/christmas-is-in-the-air <- this is a great article from Jonathan Snook on some basic JavaScripting with AIR.
