Even though Netbeans is a respectable IDE, Eclipse with its combinations of plugins can be much more powerful, and in shorter time.

Plus, with the nitrous performance of SWT, Eclipse, in my opinion, is the number one IDE for Java.

SUN should definitely take a closer look. Native integration of SWT into the Java core (and out with AWT) would do great benefit to the Java community.

Lack of fundamental facilities like multiple run configurations and project groups just don’t quite cut it for me.

I haven't had time to check this plugin out myself, but it sounds like it might be right up your alley. It's the second one listed here.

Kevin - Thanks for doing the detailed write-up. Just FYI, there is a plug-in module for the NetBeans IDE that will organize projects. I'm not sure if will meet your needs - you can see screenshots of it here and read more about it here. For multiple run configurations, there is a plug-in module available here.

NetBeans is a kick-ass IDE and I think it will steal quite alot of Eclipse users.
Competition is great, and we have not one but 2 open-source projects that are just wonderfull.

Nice write up as usual.

Regarding a Sitepoint book on Java Studio Creator I would be most interested, for that matter I'd be interested in any Java books Sitepoint are producing, any in the works?

So will I be switching to NetBeans tomorrow? I’m afraid not.

Remind me, what is your preferred IDE these days?
