"As long as I don’t read anywhere that a guy is making a huge amount of money with this type of ads I’ll not try them…"

This is all AdSense Link Units are, and they're clearly profitable enough to be seen on some very high traffic sites (Alexa top 1000).

If by some horrible chance I were to lose my AdSense account, or AdSense stopped offering link units, I've got my backup scripts in place and ready to go. I can make link units to paid search result pages, or AdSense-style text banners in any size, ready to go from Searchfeed, 7Search, ABCSearch and ePilot -- some using javascripts they provide, others parsing XML feeds they provide.

Right now AdSense and YPN pay more for me than embedding links or ads from any of these sites, even though I get to choose the keywords, but I think it's always good to have a backup plan.

I personaly don't like this type of ads because I think they are anoying. Yes, they catch my attention, but I've never clicked one of these and found something useful on the target page.
In my oppinion these green and double underlined links destroy the design because they look unnatural to me.
