I agree... I think this is somewhat a waste of time. They could have spent that time much much better I feel.

Is PHP popular because it is the most elegant programming language? Hardly. If you are using .NET, why use PHP over C#?

Because PHP is a superior language in many areas (not all, certainly, but it's got several advantages over C#, especially when it comes to "web" stuff).

This seems like a silly thing, anyway. Why implement PHP in C# when there's already an existing code base? They're simply not going to be able to keep up with the main project's development, and will fork eventually to a point where they just won't be compatable.

Also, most advanced PHP developers have gotten used to the idea of being able to tweak / modify / alter internals. We love Open Source, and aren't keen on the idea of using something that isn't.

Right now’s it’s still a Windows only solution which will be a turn off for many.

...Another barrier is the authors aren’t really being open (as in Open Source) with Phalanger.

Then it destroys two significant reasons for PHP's uptake. How would this would ever turn up on $5/month web hosts?

PHP is a platform for dynamic web content which is:

1) free
2) simple
3) cross platform deployable

Unless Phalanger can boast the same it certainly will be an "also ran".

I have PHP and C#.net running on apache2 on a win2003 box, with a mySQL5 DB.

The lines are already becoming very blurred, and my php code is becoming legacy.

Now if IIS could only emulate mod_rewrite properly!
