Mike,

My consulting clients find that Rotary is a GREAT organization to join. Great networking, great service, great speakers. You can't be blatant about marketing your services, but over time you develop relationships with humble yet surprisingly well-connected individuals.

At one of the places I used to work (a small local ISP - well, small in national terms, but big in the local market), the owner was very involved with the local Rotary Club. I think he was part of it because he was genuinely interested in helping people, not just for the networking, but he got a lot of clients out of his involvement.

Whew! The problem individuals working in this area were with small or new firms, or were by themselves. Your guy sounds great. Has a big firm behind him, but is networking in a very personal way and sounds like he keeps his commitments. Wish more soales folk were like that! He should do really well.

Best of luck!

A Nony Mous,

Thanks for warning. He's licensed and works with a very large firm. I checked him out carefully.

This is off-topic, but there is a school of thought in investments today that things like index funds are not going to do as well as sound research and good stock picking in next few years. I won't get into why here, but I appreciate the warning and can assure you that this is a regular guy with access to a firm with a sound track record and great research capabilities.

Alarm Bells should be ringing REALLY LOUDLY. Especially if his rate of return is significantly greater than traditional Money Managers. Make sure he's licensed. This sounds dangerously like a new type of fraternal ponzi scheme.
