I've created a site using javascript that does the panning like Google maps, except on a matrix of screenshots. Those who are interested in checking it out can go to The Web Showcase

Does Google hate Opera? I'm guessing that it won't ever work in Opera, even if it is a modern, JavaScript-enabled desktop browser

Opera (uptil and including 7.54) doesn't support XmlHttpRequest, and Google isn't all that great at providing JavaScript-less fallbacks in beta software. :-) Atleast, not to the best of my knowledge.

You might have to wait till Opera 8.

charmedlover, Opera's JavaScript is still tricky, even though it has seen some great improvements since the early 7.x versions. The most reliable JavaScript support is in IE5.5+ and Gecko.

Why would google hate Opera? I think they have more reasons for hating Internet Explorer. Plus, they're not making a statement. If they supported Opera and dropped IE-support THEN they would be making a statement :)
