I don't know if it is just my Mac or what but above everyone is saying for MACs command click. I tried that a lot and it didn't work for me. I have an iBook G4, bought in '05'. I control clicked on the black layer, menu poped up, selected create clipping mask and my silhouette popped up. ta da. Is this the same action as in the directions?

Great tutorial. How do you then smooth the pixelated (jagged) edges on the silhouette?

Thanks...

Hi Mike -
You want to CTRL+click on the layer thumbnail itself in the Layers palette.

Hope that helps!

What a nice tutorial . . until that mysterious CTRL+click nonsense. What are you talking about? This doesn't work even in Windows! Explain it without the CTRL+click please. Somebody should.

I don’t understand the CTRL + Click. It doesn’t make any sense to me…

If you are on a Mac, that would be pressing 'Command' and clicking the mouse button at the same time.

This is by far the best way to do this. Its fast and works like a charm! The 'smart highlighting' option works AMAZING too. www.adenmott.com

Hi there,
Great tutorial, I just get stuck on this part could you explain a little more in detail? I understand the CLTRL-click but from then on im lost... :(

When I’m happy with it, I add a new layer and fill it with black. Then I Ctrl-click (or Command-click in Mac) the extracted layer to get the outline of a shape. With the black layer still selected in the Layers Palette, I add a layer mask… and my silhouette is complete!

This is a nicely done tutorial on extracting. I'd like to point out that the iPod effect is more complex than this. View one of the commercials frame-by-frame and you'll notice that the people are not solid black; they have highlights. For your example, you might paint with a low opacity white on the mask to let some of the original photo show through. A good spot would be the shine on the boots that you pointed out. Thanks for a good article.
