I agree, .NET's biggest limitation is the lack of multi-platform. I personally don't imagine seeing this changing in the near future.

What would be the commercial point of it?

Imagine, your an ASP.NET developer and .NET is now multi-platform. You would want to use the latest and greatest Windows Server OS, but your boss has heard the wonders of Apache on Linux! With a £0 price tag, and your setup is going to cost a lil more than that! What do you think their going to go for?

Making .NET cross-platform would be like them shotting themselves in the foot, IMHO! :)

Maybe making only client apps cross platform, and not .NET, but making ASP.NET would hurt their server sales.

I might be dead wrong, but thats the way I see it.

:)

There is a big problem with Microsoft supporting cross platform or interoperability. Think about it: Europe and others say that Microsoft (and I am a BIG Microsoft fan) is a monopoly. Clearly it isn't, everywhere I look I see non-Microsoft products, but there you have it. However, the legal rulings that Microsoft is a Monopoly would be strengthened if Microsoft got deeply involved in this type of support.
It is your opportunity to make it happen, get rich retire early.

Go for it.
