Webmasters, Spam and Viruses?

by Blane Warrene

One key element in any web developers portfolio of responsibilities has been growing for those who manage their own servers or the servers of their clients. That is the constant battle against spam and viruses.

One excellent open source tool is out to save them time and score them some points with their clients. Amavisd New, found at http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/, is a Perl-based solution that sits as an interface for anti-virus and spam tools to a webmaster’s mail server (Postfix, Sendmail, etc.). Amavisd New natively works with 21 anti-virus tools as well as working with Spam::Assassin, found at http://www.spamassassin.org/index.html.

This adds a layer of security between you and your clients inboxes and further gives you the tools to possibly reduce unwanted email reaching them currently.

Some of the tools Amavisd New supports for anti-virus include:

ClamAV - http://www.clamav.net/
F-Prot - http://www.f-prot.com/
Kaperspky - http://www.kaspersky.com
Trend Micro - http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm
Vexira - http://www.centralcommand.com
