Geeks and Sport: They Don’t Have to be Mutually Exclusive

While this doesn’t strictly relate to the SitePoint community as such, I am too proud of the guys not to tell you about this. Check out the SitePoint Sharks strutting their stuff at the Australian Corporate Games in the weekend. It was an awesome team effort, but Digga (Andrew Gardner from Learnable.com) was the star of the show, hitting two free throws after the buzzer to win the game by one point.

The last week has been a huge one for the SitePoint community, with our tally of Facebook fans hitting the 10,000 mark. I am extra excited about that fact because in a moment of rash skiting a few months ago when we hit 5k, I told my boss at the time that we’d have 10k by Christmas. So, thanks to each and every one of you for not making me into a liar. On a slightly more serious note, our Facebook community is really starting to take off and I love the interaction that is going on on our page. If you haven’t already checked it out, now would be a great time to do so.

It is an equally exciting time over at the forums right now, with our awards season in full swing. Nominations are in and voting will begin next week. Make sure you take a few minutes to vote for your favorite forum members, even if it’s only in a couple of categories. More information next week.

The other thing that is about to happen at the forums is the kick off of The Great Holiday Photography Competition. Our photography challenge earlier in the year was so popular that we have decided to do it again. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results and to check out what the holidays mean to people all around the world. Here in NZ they’re all about beaches and BBQ’s, but I imagine that sounds about as foreign as you can imagine to some of you! Even if you’re a rank amateur when it comes to taking photos (as I am), why not take part anyway? Show us what the holidays mean to you.

This weekend we have our SitePoint Staff Christmas party at beautiful Phillip Island, so follow @sitepointdotcom on Twitter to keep up with our antics. If Twitter isn’t your thing, I’ll make sure I post some ridiculous photos on Facebook.

Hot Topics This Week

One of the most interesting debates for a while is going on in the Accessibility and Usability forum this week. If that sort of thing interests you, check out this thread discussing How Accessibility is Decided in the Specs.

A thread that I particularly like this week can be found in our General Chat forum, although it’s possibly more suited to Careers and Education. If you run your own business, jump into the Why Are You Here thread and tell us what it is that drives you and how you keep going through the hard times.

I’m interested to hear what kinds of competitions you’d like to see us run over at the forums, so if you have any ideas, join in over at News and Announcements and tell me what you’re especially interested in.

This one makes me laugh. The guys in the Graphics forum are talking about why they hate drop shadows.

Ok, well I’m done for the week. I’ll be back, same time, same place, next week (although perhaps a little worse for wear after the party!). So, until then…
