Your Thoughts on Ad Block Browser Plugin?

oops:

i noted this:
using adobe flash media to store data
using iphone html to store data

is the visitor’s browser using bandwidth when ad networks store visitor data in the user’s media player or iphone html storage?

browser has to make calls out to confirm if the visitor is the same person that was previously on a website , right, …so it must re-direct the visistor’s browser.

anyone know?

Thanks for the response. I am more concerned about doing deals and making ad networks pay the mobile enablers! I know wassup!

using adobe flash media to store data
using iphone html to store data
making browser send calls to a ton of others

NO ONE CAN ANSWER WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ALL THOSE CALLS ARE MADE THAT i NOTED IN IE!!!..WHAT DOES THAT TELL U…

Is the visitor’s browser doing the calling and is their bandwidth being used up? The ie was a visitor goes to a webpahge and then this starts…who’s calling whom…and who’s browser and bandwidth is being used?

A)* App start

    • calls twitter
    • calls beacon.pinchmedia.com, sends UDID, iPhone firmware, app ID & version, crack & jailbreak status, start & stop times

B) * App close

Noticed this interesting approach to adblock here
(you’ll only see if you have adblock installed)

It pops up a modal window saying ‘Sorry to interrupt, but…
It seems you are using AdBlock to block our advertisement (yes, 1 tiny ad). Displaying ads is essential for us to keep good quality of our posts here at PixelTango. Please unblock, so that we can keep this site alive!’

There’s then a countdown of a few seconds before the close button appears. The windows reappears every so often .

After how many minuets would the pop-up apear? I tried that site and the pop-up didn’t appear, probably either where I’ve got the script that generates it blocked or the pop-up itself is getting blocked.

Appeared for me after about 20 seconds on my first visit.

Have just went back and revisited and now it’s not appearing, maybe they log ip, but I notice they have also dynamically changed the advert block to ‘It seems like you have blocked our advertisement. That’s cool, but please consider to make a donation instead. We need money to keep our servers running. Thank you for your understanding!’ With a paypal donate button underneath.

Took me a couple of tries to get that result. Seems like a quite reasonable compromise - allow people to block the ad and draw people’s attention to the fact that it costs money to run the site.

Yup, I think it’s a great resolution to the issue and I don’t see any reason for either party to get their nose out of joint as a result. Nice thoughtful solution.

I’m not so sure about that. It may all be well if the advertisers pay on CPM basis, but if they pay on CPC basis it can be seen as an indirect solicitation to click ads. “It costs us money to run the site, don’t block ads so you can support us by clicking them”. Maybe a little far fetched but as an advertiser I would monitor this site under a magnifying glass.

That’s assuming that those who block the ads would read the message and consider unblocking the ad as a result - that was what the earlier message was apparently asking for but the current message makes no such request. Not that anyone blocking ads would unblock them just because a site asked them to (even for those sites that attempt to refuse access if the ad is blocked the person will just go elsewhere instead).

^ ditto. Many many times.

Hi,

How we can find the toolbar link?

I agree. Although, I think this sort of practice is almost non-existent now. It will certainly be against the site owners TOS.

Don’t you mean against the Advertiser’s TOS?

I welcome it, for the sole reason that most viruses, trojans, and other malware are fed onto computers from flash and javascript, blocking only those you trust is a great way to prevent infection

it is really helpful…as it prevents one from clicking ads form it’s own ip…which might result in ban of your ad account

the plugin proves to b good enough if you pay per megabite and dont actually want to see some particular ads…

Generally I don’t mind sites with ads. As long as I find their content interesting or even useful I feel like I’m contributing something to that website. What bugs me, though, is the abuse of ads.

What really piss me off related to advertising is the following:

  1. the ones that roll ofer the content just by hovering the mouse over them then hardly go away/shrink back
  2. those which are way too big and/or also take a lot of resources (large Flash/GIFs)
  3. the very colourful ones that are also animated
  4. adult/provocative ads because I also advise people while searching and I really don’t want stuff like that in my search results or the found pages
  5. too much ads on a page - which suffocate/bloat the content and/or distract way too much

As a general rule I can say I dislike very much annoying and inappropriate advertisement. I will never feel guilty to block ads on websites exaggerating with ads.

Seeing how a lot of sites these days are flooded with advertisements that are sometimes pop-ups and such. I have no other choice but to block the ads.
I only have a few advertisement companies that I allow to go through.

I agree. A few ads are fine, but not too many.

I agree. I think it’s the abuse that is the problem.

A single pop-up, not so bad, maybe even helpful.
Some sites started having multiple pop-ups - hence pop-up blockers.

A few simple well placed ads, no problem.
A page full of them, or with garish/large ads - ad blockers.

A small flash download, OK
One or more mega weight flash - flash blockers.

Maybe if people stopped trying to squeeze more than they should it wouldn’t cause problems for those that do things more intelligently.

Yes, thanks - I mean against the advertiser’s TOS.
