I’m going to the both too… since its not the platform its how you optimize it.
I’m not big expert but as far as I know both have SEO plugins and will be able to make your site more SEO friendly.
I would recommend you pay more attention to the offsite optimization as well which is very important part of the SEO as well.
Joomla Advantages:

Joomla Disadvantages:

Still not user-friendly enough for everyone to understand

Not quite as powerful as Drupal, and can be a bit confusing for some to jump into another

Recently rebuilt the entire system from ground-up, and so there are still many out there sticking to the old versions (1.0.x)
Wordpress Advantages:

Simple to use - No need for spend more time.

Excellent for blogging or sharing thoughts in a sequential manner

Even the most elderly of users can get the hang of it quickly
wordpress Disadvantages:

its either of them…because its still up to you how your SEO will work well in any platform your gonna use…
I understand from many viewpoints that Joomla or Wordpress has nothing to do with SEO ranking. I would come to the same opinion too if not first-hand experience the difference between the two.
You would be surprised, given two similar sites with comparable ranking, one with Joomla and one Wordpress, how quickly Google rank Wordpress site. It is also usually ranks higher for the intended keywords compared to the Joomla site.
It all depends on your needs. They’re both good choices. Wordpress is more of a blogging platform, while Joomla is a full fledged CMS. They can both be customized and be seo friendly.
