I’ve built my child theme as per the Wicked Wordpress Themes book guidelines and I’m finding that my site is taking a ridiculously long time to load each page.
At the moment I have a header graphic, one graphic for each nav (no rollover states) and just a few lines of text on each page. The page load icon in Firefox spins at least 3 times to load each page. This is unacceptable. I’ve tried WordPress cache plugins and deactivating all plugins as I’ve seen suggested on the web but it’s still really slow. Those pages should load instantly in their current state.
Hmmm. I agree with you. They should load instantly. If it is not WP then it has to be MySQL. Which OS are you running? and did you install MySQL by yourself (I mean, no wamp or lamp or xamp installers? Which version of MySQL?
I was hosting it on my own web space at 1&1 which is running PHP 5 MySQL 5. Eventually, I just uninstalled WP since I don’t need a blog and now it loads instantly as it should. I’m going to try and build my own CMS since that’s all I need. WP is too massive a learning curve and too top heavy for what it delivers.
If you were working online then there may be other issues involved. I would have contacted 1&1 support first.

If you need something really straight forward, go for it. Definitely, you will learn more. But can’t agree with your last statement. From all CMSs, WP is the one that has the fastest learning curve, and it delivers loads of stuff and allows you to grow. But that’s my opinion, of course
