Word documents to web site questions

I have several documents that I created in Word format (*.doc) that I want to include as linkable pages on my web site and was wondering the best way to do this. I want the web site visitor to be able to view these documents, 1/2 of which are just formatted Word text documents (resume and professional development) and the other 1/2 contain graphics within them (I think they are metafile pics format). Do I have to convert these files to html format or is there any easier way? Is the html export feature in Word worthless or a viable alternative? I am reading the Sitepoint book “Build Your Own Web Site the Right Way” and couldn’t find the information in there but I think I do recall the author saying never to use the html export feature of Word. Thanks.

Hi JohnRCarr. Welcome to SitePoint.

You do have a few options, but in my opinion, your best option is to convert the Word document to a PDF and just link to it on your web pages. The documents are more accessible that way than offering the Word file itself for download, as fewer people might be able to open it.

Yes, you could export to a .html file, but boy it’s ugly. That book you are reading gives you all the tools you need to build real web pages to feature that content, which is really the ideal. That way you can continue the look and feel of your website.

Ralph, ok thanks for the reply, I’ll try the PDF conversion and link to it on my website. John
