Wireless router through ICS + usb modem? can it be done

Hi, ive aquired a netgear wireless router which has no adsl modem built in.

My current computer uses a usb modem and ive enabled internet connection sharing which allows me to run a small network using a netgear switch from said computer without a problem.

Ive tried just replacing the switch for the router but it doesn’t allow the computers connecting to the wireless to get to the internet.

Is it even possible to do what iam trying or should i just get an adsl modem with a network connection to plug the router into so it doesn’t have to go through the computer?

any advice appreciated

God knows how it did it but its all working now. For some reason my original setup had stopped working after i messed with this, so i ran the setup network wizard in xp and turned the comp off and on again. Didn’t think anything more about it until i noticed the orange light on the router was now green. connected with my laptop and job done its all working.
Thanks for the replies.

A DSL modem is a stand alone thing, to the best of knowledge. What I mean is that the modem can be connected to the internet all by itself, with or without a computer attached.

That said, your setup should be: internet - modem - router - you & other local computers. No need, at all, for ICS.

Do you have the gateway IP address on all the computers set to that of the computer running the ICS? That should then route all the internet requests to the right place so that they will work.

Another place to check is the router itself. If you set the gateway IP address on that to point to the computer running the ICS then that will redirect the internet traffic the right way without having to update the individual computers.
