Why sitemap created in XML

Hello all SPF users,
I want to know that why the sitemap of a site is written in XML format? What is the difference between sitemal.xml and sitemap.html? how does it helps in SEO? Please share your knowledge about this.

XML sitemaps are the preferred format for search engines. HTML ones are usually used to help your viewers navigate the site.

as per SEO it helps to create internal linking.

Google Sitemaps protocol was developed in response to the growing size and complexity of sites. Through the XML protocol, search engines can follow the URLs more efficiently, optimizing searches in all the information on one page.
Therefore Sitemap is used in XML.

To know more i think you can check the following link - its about Sitemaps only

Sitemap.XML is the authenticated format for Major Search Engine Engines Crawlers Whereas Sitemap.HTML is the authenticated format for online users in order to navigate entire website at single place.

Fist I would like to say that HTML sitemap is not case sensitive but XML sitemap is case sesitive. Second thing that HTML sitemap created for users prospectives & XML sitemap for crawler.

Note- I could be crawler miss our html tags if we not proper nesting but xml file crawler fully because you can’t upload until it not working that’s why we use xml sitemap.

Thanks!
