I made my own wordpress site from the start just to see if I could actually do it.
I used some SEO techiques and got to no1 in Google for my key word. However, my site was down for about a week and now I’m not even in the first 10 pages of Google.
It’s not even a money making site, just a hobby, so I don’t understand whats happened.
Can anyone advise me?

What’s happened is that your site has been offline for a week. Google has almost certainly kept trying to visit it, and got more and more frustrated at getting 404 errors or worse, and so doesn’t think you’re worth putting at the top of the list any more. Why should it? As far as it’s concerned, your site is flaky and unreliable. It is still indexed, just not very high up, so you haven’t been blacklisted or anything like that. Now you need to prove to Google that your site is still alive and still worth having up there at the top - continue with the good work that got you to #1 before, and make sure you don’t have a week of downtime again!
Check whether you have bought links at any time of building links for your site or blog, because Google does not encourage link building through buying of links.

I have just visited your site and found that there is only 3 backlinks to your site currently. Also, keeping updating blogs with niche relative contents would be really essential for keeping your blog on top of search engines.

what do you mean by down exactly?? is it your lose your ranking or literally down as in site error??
Just sit & think what you did recently .Where have you submitted whether any kind submission etc. Just go there & delete that. Second thing you can check out the bad neighborhood .There are many tools which can check these things.
This is the worst example of getting all your efforts ruin by a single act. You should have tracked when will be the next visit of google to crawl your website and then should have done the wbeiste down for whatever purpose you wanted to do so.
Did you use some technique that is outside the guidelines of Google?
You may have fallen into the sandbox, however, do not worry, eventually return to normal.
