When spanning two drives, does the process leave any room on the first drive, or does it completely fill the first drive?

I’m going to span two drives.

Everyone says that you should leave space on a drive for safety.

So when you span two drives, is there any space left on the first drive after it reaches full?

Is there a way to force the first drive to leave some space on it?
