What would you charge?

Hey all, Need some sitepointer’s advice.

I got offered to design a magento site and have no clue what to charge. The client wants me to design the site, then teach them how to use it.

I am used to doing little designs, like 2-5 page mini sites and charge from $175 -$300, (is that to little)

So my question is what would you experienced designers charge for a magento design and teaching the client how to use it.

I have been in design for a few years but just got into offering service this past year and like I mentioned it was just doing little sites.

Hard to believe no one has an opinion.

This might be of some help:

So you’re who the one giving people the idea they can get a custom-designed website for a couple hundred bucks.

By “design the site and then teach him how to use it” I’m assuming not just designing and sending to a developer to implement on the site but that you’re actually designing and coding the site? If that’s the case…

Have you ever used Magento? It’s big, bulky, and I believe mostly object-oriented PHP. I know PHP front and back and working on Magento was one of the more annoying experiences of my life. Even if you’re intimately familiar with PHP, depending on the amount of customization you do, you’ll have to learn the Magento way of doing things.

That said, it really depends on why you build websites. Do you do this for a living? Or are you just doing it because you enjoy it? If you’re doing it for a living, I can’t see anyone making a profit on a Magento site for anything less than $2k.

If you’re doing it for fun, well, in that case I could say it’s totally up to you. Keep in mind though, that even if you’re doing it for fun, you’ll make things easier for yourself if you don’t condition your clients to expect a whole lot for a whole little by charging next to nothing.
