Just wondering what resolution I should be designing for in this day and age, trying to get back into website design and need to know what the current standard is.

That’s about as close to a standard as now exists given the huge variety of possible viewport sizes now in use.
Not as easy a question as it would seem. Are you designing primarily for audiences who use desktops, laptops, mobile devices? Do you prefer to stay with fixed-width layouts or are you more into elastic or liquid models? There’s no one easy answer any more. If you do require a “one size fits all” solution, I’d suggest designing an elastic, scalable layout with a minimum and maximum width, and perhaps considering an alternative layout for mobile devices. But that’s just one suggestion, and not anywhere approaching comprehensive.
