What programming language?

I am going to hire a coder to create a avatar style chatroom.

The features i want:
Supports up to 10,000 online chatters
Fast with no lag
Drag and drop avatar to a position and see it move instantly

Can someone please recommend a programming language which will do this

php should do it…

Finding a good coder is not that easy, you should try find coder offline.Don’t go to freelancer sites.
Cheers!

i dont think php can do it alone how would you automaticly update messages.

Just as important as a coder will be a good server person. The server hardware and configuration will greatly affect the performance with a significant user load.

As for languages, you’re going to need a good backend language for interaction with the database, etc. PHP, Ruby, or anything else would be adequate. The front end will then be done in HTML/CSS and Javascript to provide the interactivity you’re looking for.

Yeah, for 10,000 simultaneous users, you’ll definitely need a good, well set up server.

Chris nailed the languages: PHP, Ruby, ASP.NET, etc. for the back-end and HTML, CSS, JavaScript for the front end.

You’ll want to make sure they are following best practices for fast websites.

You’ll want to make sure all of these are followed: Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site

You’ll also want to make sure they combine their CSS into 1 file and JavaScript into 1 file.

You’ll need to store the avatars on some cloud based system. All other images will likely need to be on a CDN.

You may need everything on a CDN depending how it’s done.

If you went with a traditional server, you’d have the case of:
every user * number of HTTP requests on the page number of requests. Assuming you only need to load the images once, you’ll still have something like 10,000 requests every second into that.

It gets very tricky…

I may just stick to java with a custom built server, thansk guys.

If you want to make a software then learn C, Java, Advanced Java must.
If you want to make a website then learn HTML, CSS and PHP etc …
