I’m not sure how I can persuade people to comment on my blog (see sig). I can’t even get them to comment on my blog in a negative fashion.
Are there any techniques people have to encourage readers to comment or do you just have to be controversial in your blog postings? I’m not sure I want to be controversial just for the sake of it, I’d rather get positive or negative feedback on the article itself or maybe readers own thoughts on the subject.
Any suggestions are welcomed :).
What matters very much when you post something is the subject and the style of writing. If you talk about a now subject people will want to know more; also if you write your posts like a story, they will be bored and stop reading. try to b natural, but use a diamic language.
Also to annouce the people about the posts promote your website on facebook, on IM or on special blog directories.
I will suggest to make your blog user friendly, it passed the time when blogs need many features/slide etc, now its the time for minimal / professional designs.
So choose a simple good looking theme, maybe try one pro, secondly be active on forums which have same content related like you third do guest posts, fourth join any advertise network and promote your blog.

I’m guilty of this myself, even though my blog is new and my objective right now is to get honest feedback on the site, I still have it set so that visitors have to register a username and email addy just to post a reply.
So the best way to make it easy is to set your blog so that anyone can comment without submitting any information.
Personally, I won’t submit a reply to an interesting article I’ve just read if I have to register to do it. Most people, or at least a lot of people probably feel the same way as I do about volunteering personal information just so they can make a simple comment on something they just decided to read.
What about you? Do you feel obligated to register a new account on some blog you never heard of before just because you read an article there and felt compelled to post a short reply to it?

yeah … i guess the explanation above are more than enough , but there is one more point.
You also should be more “social” nowadays, what i mean “social” is you should join the social media network such as twitter, facebook, buzz and many more. if you have a many friends in your social media account, you should connect your post in your blog to your social media status. so if your blog updated, the social media account will automatically add your newest blog post as their status. imagine if you have 1000 friends, or followers. i bet maybe there is 10% from your friends / followers will taking a look to your blog post. and if you have a nice, useful, and attractive articles they also will leave you a comment.

Really it’s as simple as have content that people want to comment on. Create a couple of google accounts and leave comments on your own blog to kickstart discussions if you have to.
you try to ask some of your friends online to comment on your blog, may it be negative or positive comments are okay. i guess its a good start.
You should post good content in your blogs that should be useful for other readers as well as informative. If reader will find out some special point in your post then they definitely comment.

Post good original content and then at the end of the post have a call to action, something like “tell me what you think in the comments below”. Always create the impression you want their feedback.
its a good question... I think there are some things that are needed for blog to be popular and "commented". So first - interesting information and beautiful design. As for me I wont comment in the blog, which is not pleased for my eye.
Second - i need to see that a lot of people do read what im writing about. It seems its a closed circle, but i think that the administrator (in this case you) should take care of each visitor and answer to all his comments.
Third - you need time. If you would follow all these advises it would be a great start but dont stop, even if its not working, go on, it`s only the beginning!

The fact is that Google Analytics suggests that my articles are interesting (as indicated by number of visitors and average time spent of the page) but the articles themselves are not really articles designed to ask questions. The few that I do make which are sufficiently open ended are not really the primary articles on the site and have just been done of the side as it were.

It’s always good to finish your blog posts with a call to action. So that might be to contact you, sign up to your newsletter or - in your case, make a comment.
A good way is to finish off the post by saying something like
So ask people questions in the last paragraph, calling them to leave a comment.
The best way to get visitors and their comments on your blog is to create informative and quality contents. It also depends on the topic you have chosen for your blog. I have seen that the technology blogs are more viewed and lots of discussions goes into the comments. However, if you manage to create informative and fresh contents definitely, you will get lots of comments. Also, you can increase your blog network by visiting others blogs and communicating and commenting on their blogs. This way other will take initiative in your blogs and would comment on them.
if the reader likes the content you’ll surely get a comment…
and one thing…if your blog is a do follow you can get comments from those people who are hungry for the juice of do follow thing…(moderated comments to avoid spam :P)

You could try the commentluv plugin. If someone leaves a post it puts down a link to the latest post on their blogs. It sends them a little traffic in exchange for their participation.
try posting original content with some questions in it, i mean a bit inquisitive 
Controversial posts always seem to work at attracting comments. Why not comment yourself after your actual post with a question - the best thing you can do is get commentors to start a bit of a debate with each other by showing two sides of an argument.
