What education would you recommend to be a Web developer?

There are lots of different views on this - but here’s mine!

I personally think that many of the available courses in the general field of Web Development are out of date - teaching out of date methods. By their very nature, it takes time to formulate and set a course and quite often by the time that’s done, it’s no good any more.

I tend to think that a great portfolio is of more use to you than a certificate. Yes you may not be able to get a paid gig yet - but even if you put together examples of your work that just show what you can do I think it’s helpful.

I’d also suggest ensuring that you have a very firm grasp of the basics of HTML and CSS before moving onto Scripting and database stuff. That way you’ll really be able to take advantage of whatever the latest “fashionable” skill is. People can run into trouble if they try to do things the other way around.

I’d suggest that if you’re determined to do a particular course it might be worth getting opinions of that course to ensure it’s worth it before handing over large sums of money!

It’s a non-stop learning process though - which is part of the fun of it!
