What Does Local SEO Consist of?

What does most local SEO services consist of? So far here’s what I got:

  • Add company to Google Places, Yahoo Local, Bing Local and a bunch of other local engines like Yelp and yellowpages etc.
  • Submit website to the 3 search engines up and get verified.
  • Edit your WHOIS to have your address and keep address consistency throughout all pages, branding, engines.
  • Get a Linkedin account for the business

I feel like i’m being pretty naive though since most other companies are charging monthly fees. I look at most of these are one time set ups: fill out profile with pictures, keywords and some good reviews. Are there some key points I am missing?

You need to have your NAP (business name, address and phone number) consistent across the web. Having small differences in your address such as ‘St’ versus ‘Street’ can cause problems for the search engines matching up names so they could think it is two different businesses.

There are 3 major data providers Axciom, Localeze and InfoUSA that most of the top search engines use as data sources, so those are good places to submit and ensure your business information is correct.

ok here is a little tip.
if you want to do local seo for your product the do add your local city in your anchor keywords like if you are selling
PS3 then use anchor word like “Buy PS3 in Michigan” where Michigan is your city.
this thing will help when a user will type buy ps3 and google will auto complete with Buy ps3 in Michigan.

It also involves submitting your info (or your NAP, just like what revium mentioned) on local directories. Another thing would be the creation of content that would create buzz which can help get traffic to the site.

The most effective Internet marketing services should reach out to the people close by in order to expand foot traffic right with the website traffic. Add company to Google Places, Yahoo Local, Bing Local and a bunch of other local engines like Yelp and yellowpages etc.

Apart from giant search engines, it is better to target the vertical search engines when we are targeting local market. Meta Tags and MicroData will boost your ranking in local search engines. Business Listing also helps to get good business from local markets.

If I had a local website - I would do a bunch of advertising offsite … buy a park bench ad or a billboard … hire a hot girl to hold up your sign on a busy street … etc post flyers…

I admit with Howdy_McGee’s four jobs. Two more tricks to follow for local listing. 1) Set the GEO LOCATION field in Google Webmaster tool.
2) Use GEO position and GEO Placement meta tags in website.
