What do you want to learn in 2016?

I will do my best to read even more marketing-based articles. Sadly in 2015 I was to busy all the time. I really believe that now I will have much more time!

Currently learning the ins and outs of Google AdWords. So that is the challenge before me so far for 2016. I would also like to learn script and code for excel to be able to make all of my work in excel more efficient.

Great point. On the JS channel, one of the things we want to focus on are tutorials detailing how to make something with real world value. The rating widget is a great example.

I don’t think it’s “hard” but it leaves you less motivated perhaps. I find it always exciting to learn new things, whether I have an immediate use for them or not. Things get boring if they stay the same, always having something new to learn means always having a challenge. I guess for me that is motivation enough, but for others I can understand why it wouldn’t be.

Ultimately, the way I see it, learning something new is never a waste of time. And being able to add new skills or knowledge to a CV is always a good thing. As long as you never stop learning, you are always developing yourself and likely your career.

Hi there-I just signed up. I want to learn javascript.
I have taken a class in HTML5 & CSS.
I am in a beginner JavaScript class at the city college. I am struggling, but I love to write
the code.
My question: I am not good at math, and don’t have years and years left, should I even bother? I sort of feel too old, but I LOVE this stuff, I even dream in code. I am at the getting discouraged phase. Any feedback would help. Thx.

Whether you want to learn to code in order to gain employment in the field, or just because you love to code - don’t allow yourself to become discouraged if you are struggling a bit a this stage. Never feel you are too old, or wonder why you should bother.

Learning how to code takes time - a lot more time than just one course. You need to practice and internalize all the skills you are learning and sometimes courses go too fast and don’t give you the opportunity to practice each stage before you move on. It is not a smooth journey - there will be a lot of ups and downs, but if you stick to it, eventually you will be able to code.

You don’t have to be good at math, but being able to think logically and to break a problem down into small chunks will help.

My plan is to learn the MEAN stack this year, though I am not sure if I will be able to. I have already learn Javascript and AJAX, but still not really good at it.

Coding front-end (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) does not necessarily require you to be good with math. There are indeed advanced techniques that still leave me flabbergasted by the level of math involved, but those are exceptions. You are more likely to bump into math and physics if you go down the way of game programming or when working complex animations. Working on normal websites require very little math.

So don’t get discouraged and perhaps try switching the learning method. Have a look at our Premium content (https://www.sitepoint.com/premium/paths) and check if the materials we offer are on your liking. You can check the service for free for 14 days or you can get a huge discount if you are a student (http://www.sitepoint.com/premium/students). Also don’t hesitate to come to us for help if you are struggling. We’ll support you as best as we can, but we can’t walk the road in your place.

Talking about my list of things to learn - I have two major fields that I want to get into: Flexbox layouts and SVG.

Javascript, javascript, javascript.

Did I mention Javascript :joy: ?

I wanna learn guitar… i figure i’ll learn work things as i go along… but the dream of guitaring one day… seems far fetched enough… i am going to convert it into reality before it becomes a another universe away

First step: buy a guitar

I tried to do the same thing the last 20 years. In the end I arrived to the conclusion that I will never be a Steve Vai, Carlos Santana… Playing guitar is a purely cerebral act for me. There’s very little that comes “natural”. Still, I did changed a few guitars so far - latest is an electric guitar. I do take it out of its cover every couple of months, but it’s there if I really feel the need to annoy the cats with it.

I would recommend this guy http://www.justinguitar.com/ - his website has tons of free lessons, from absolute beginners (including how to choose your first guitar) to very advanced.

A melodeon does a far better job of that than a guitar!
