What am I doing wrong?

I have a site at andrewodendaal.com that I have been running for a few years now, it has daily-weekly posts going back for quite a while about programming issues mostly and also services rendered and some web tools up there.
I also show off my portfolio on the site.
I get a few hundred hits a day and have been trying with affliate programs like, adsense, adbrite, kontera, bidvertiser and 2 or 3 more in the past about 2 years.
I have never really been very succesful with any of these and lately have just added a single bidvertiser block on the RHS of the site.

What am I doing wrong and how can I improve the ROI space and make some $$$ out of that space?

You’re probably always going to struggle with contextual ad options like Adsense if you put them in an ad-spot in the RH column like that. I’ve found that Adsense works better inside posts (ie. in the middle of a post where the ads can target the content better).

It’s also hard to make decent money with Adsense when you have low traffic volumes.

I’d look for some affiliate programs you can join and advertise those in the RH ad spots. For your specific niche try and identify what products your site visitors would be interested in and sign up as an affiliate to those products. For example, when you’re reading other blogs similar to yours, what type of affiliate ads are on there and which do you actually take notice/read/buy from?

Aim to replicate those!

@benusso, So what you’re saying is that I’m attracting the smart web users and should rather be attracting “non-web-devs” to trick? lol

I don’t want to change my targetted user market by the drive to make some $$$ from the site, I’d rather keep my flow as is and just learn (anybody?) how to monitize it without getting rid of the devs.

Does anybody know anything about this? Must be someone? … hmmmm

Webmasters know what is advert on your website and don’t click so often like normal users.

Thanks Hyena, you had a very good point.
I have changed it all a little bit and will be playing with the RH column for the next however-long.

If anyone else has anything to add, I’m always all ears!

Thanks to everyone so far though.
