We're All Shiny and New

Yup. I like it. Thanks.

Nice and clean design. kudos! right now i am unable to access the forum of css, it says ‘Forbidden’ when click on css via topics. http://www.sitepoint.com/css/

Yes, the main site—to which that link goes—is down for maintenance at the moment. (A redesign was launched yesterday, but it’s down again due to server issues.) That link will be live again shortly, and it lands on a pretty cool new page.

You know it’s not displaying the top of the screen properly on IE8, I take it? Unless this is some new avant-garde menu style, I think the blue vertical list on the right hand side of this should be something else:

I know, IE8 is getting on a bit, but it’s an XP machine and no newer IE will load. I don’t like Chrome, despite Googlemail insisting that I should. And I didn’t like Firefox last time I used it, and it’s not as if it’s IE6. Also note that I’m on a mobile broadband connection, but that shouldn’t matter - the missing image in top right doesn’t show missing after a time-out due to a slow connection.

Reading the above it seems like we might be in an interim state here so ignore the above if you know about the issue.

I agree that, so long as XP is a force of reckon, IE8 should not b0rk. For those who find IE the best of available browsers, 8’s it.

So far I am liking this new design. The greys actually help other stuff stand out, and avatars and signatures add colour nicely, instead of competing with orange and blue.

After much bare-chested server wrestling, I’m glad to report the new SitePoint.com is back online.

Assuming all our monitoring systems maintain their pretty little green graphs, and not the disturbing, gaudy red ones of last week, we’ll be ironing out the last issues here (including the IE8 borkage).

Thanks for your patience everyone. We reckon the new site is worth it.

Will comments from the recent blog posts on SP be carried over to the new design? I’ve been getting a lot of notifications about new blog comments today, but there are no comments showing on those posts.

There is a short period where we’d need manually transfer those comments into the new system. We’ll put it on the list

Cool. Any idea why new blog comments aren’t showing up? I’ve received a ton of emails today saying there are new comments, but now new comments are showing up on the blog posts.

@AlexW; will an option for any given article be added at some point to generate a more “printer friendly” view for printing (which would include all pages of a multi-page article)?

Whoa! I thought I clicked the wrong bookmark for a second!

I REALLY like the new look, a lot! I do sort of miss the orange a bit, but I think I’ll get used to it.

Got some new orange icons coming shortly. Just got a few priorities to straighten out.

To be 100% honest, we hadn’t given a lot of thought to the print version until now. As it happens, the default CSS renders a pretty decent print anyway (IMHO).

So, it’s more likely I’d bring in a print stylesheet, rather than separate print HTML – I prefer not to have multiple copies of the same content hanging around to get indexed.

Given that, and looking at the current print preview, I’d be looking to:

  • Reposition the author pic
  • Remove menu button (redundant in print)
  • Remove social components (redundant in print)
  • Rework header

Anything else?

Do we have many multipage articles?

I always like to see URLs displayed in brackets after a link in the print styles. Makes the links meaningful. E.g.

a[href]:after {content:" (" attr(href) ")";}

I’m digging the new design and layout. Well done guys.

Thanks Bill.

I love the new look, it really helps people quickly get into the section they need. But why is the forums link so hidden away?

Mainly just a case of not wanting to tie them together super tightly while we were still working out a lot of the inevitable bugs and tweaks you find in real world use, rather than testing. We’re getting comfortable with where both the content site and the forums are now, so we’ll be looking to tighten that cross-linking now.

Suggestion: add right padding to the ‘collapse’ div of the categories, otherwise long h2’s (such as the description for Programming) will cover that icon.

Also Perl spelled PERL is just screaming “we haven’t looked at this language since 1994” :stuck_out_tongue: so I suggest a caps change there as well.

Ah - good spotting. Thanks. Sorted.
