Website for my family

Hi, I want to make a site for my family that includes the ability for us to post a blog (one central one, with the ability for me/my wife to post on it under our own names), and have photo galleries.

Hopefully this is the right section to post this in…

I want to allow others (family members) to register so that they can view galleries and post comments on blog entries/photos. I also want the main page to have a central password for access so that I can limit knowledge of the registration to family/friends.

I want it to be completely customizable to the way I want it to look.

I know html/css and some basic php, but I’m wondering if there’s an easy solution for this or should I try to code it up myself? We will be hosting it on our own domain and I just want to get it up as quick as possible.

You can host WordPress on your own domain and hosting account. In fact, in my opinion, that’s the best way to do it. The place to get started is at http://www.wordpress.org/

oh I already have hosting and multiple domains - I am totally clueless about Wordpress though, I will look into how to host it.

thanks so much for your help.

Excellent, thanks. Glad to hear there is something pre-made to be honest, wanted to get this up and running without ‘work’

Can I use Wordpress on my own hosting though, so we can have our own domain etc?

Sorry about your dog. :frowning:

I’m not a wordpress guru by any means. But I think you can host your own wordpress site but you will need server space (which costs $$) and you will need a domain name. I also think you can let wordpress take care of the hosting and just point your domain at them. So you will have your own domain.

My feeling for these types of sites the best way to go is as free as possible. Years from now, your credit card expires, your email has changed and all of a sudden your site is down. Before you realize it everything has been lost. If you go with a free hosted solution you don’t have to worry about any of this.

Wordpress 100%. I recently used this platform to keep the family and friends updated on the progress of my sick dog. Literally had it setup and posting in a matter of minutes. Also setup a flickr account to assist in image posting.

Check it out.

Wordpress comes to mind as a pretty easy to use platform.

Thank you Shyflower, I’m on my way!
