Website encryption for small business?

Recently, I heard that some private data were stolen from the website of a business here. It was found that the fired employee had stolen the data. This led me to think about my websites security. Mine is a small business but we have many stored customer data. I read this blog on website encryption. http://nci.ca/benefits-website-encryption/ It has given a brief idea about what is encryption and it benefits.
Do small businesses need website encryption? And will there be any added maintenance cost for an encrypted website? Need advice.

Since the customer data is your utmost priority, you should be encrypting the websites to secure the customers’ data within. This would also secure your own repute & reliability. Yes there are the involvement of maintenance costs regarding an encrypted website.

Encryption doesn’t help in that situation - they can just as easily steal the code to decrypt all the data as to steal the encrypted data - and then decrypt it at their leisure.
