Website/Company name?

Hey guys me again,

Anyway here’s what I’m wondering. Ok so I wanted to do up a little portfolio website for myself just to try and further my skills. Now I’ll probably never end up using this website but just in case I do I wanna do it as correct as I can.

So I was trying to think up a name I could use and I wanted it to be good in case I ever do use this website I’d be hoping to use the name. So the other evening inspiration struck and I came up with the name: Genesis Design. But having done a search there are already 2 or 3 using this name.

So I’m wondering if I can use this name without causing myself any legal or any other sort of trouble? And if so would you suggest using this or scrapping it completely and going back to the drawing board?

Thanks,
Richard.

Richard, Genesis Design is a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It’s a great idea but I suggest you keep thinking and looking. Let me know if you have any questions on this. Sincerely, john cummings, partner, genesis

You can do a trademark search in your country to see if anyone else has registered Genesis as a mark in the same industry. You’d also want to search any countries that have agreements with yours for international trademark enforcement. I would be surprised if nobody is using Genesis for whatever type of work you’re doing already, and it could also be protected as a common law trademark even if not registered.

Come up with something original, or use your real name for your portfolio as many designers do.
