Web developer or Web Designer

Hi,
I been interviewed couple of times, say 4-5 times and been rejected! , reason? I lack MVC or OOP knowledge or hands on experience with them, i know what i lack in but i can’t get through it. Its like my mind can’t grasp. I know working hard counts and i do but if given a chance to prove which i am not getting. This is my story.
I been freelancing for 4 years and work has been really cold since last year and before it I was always on my toes (was good). When I started freelance I did Wordpress themes and got better with it in 3 years but always I was asked to code like programming, (I do love programming as in the way a click can send emails, play video, pause video etc so php work was involved). Before freelancing I did jobs, my longest job was of 3 years and it was of web designer and as a person who loves photoshop and graphic I was writing CSS and HTML and that was it and got good with it with time and browsers to browsers comparison of look and feel. After that I didn’t landed anywhere solid as people wanted me to work on php much and I didn’t know it. Now I am faced with a career question, because I get numerous calls from recruitment agency and while I worked in Wordpress and magneto (theme development), i m asked for php and I say yes as I know it but not a expert, so I had couple of interviews but couldn’t make it through as I m no expert or mid level php developer. It’s a constant rejection for last 3 months and no work for last 4 years. My parents is supporting me but I have to look for myself and my family.

I don’t know what to do or whether I should leave the computer’s line and start something else, then again I don’t have formal education but I constantly learn from treehouse and lynda. A part of me want to do arts as I love colours and animation 3D but what I don’t excel in that too. How can i motivate myself when I get rejected, how can I figure what I can do good or good at? And if I should consider career change or be a web designer instead of web developer

Hi there, I’ve changed the title of your post (it was “Web designer or Web designer”), I think what you really meant is what it says now?

As far as your question is concerned, I guess that if you want to pursue a career as web developer, then you’ll have to address the areas you lack. In other words, you’ll have to study PHP and OOP, at least enough to pass the job interview.
And if you’re convinced you can’t do that, then yes, you should concentrate on web design jobs, or do a career change.

Hi, if you are good at css and html but lack the skills to work for a large company, you could possibly get work with some small businesses,

Look at some of your local mom and pop business sites. Find some that are really bad or non existent. Now determime if your skills could supply them with what they may need.

If so spend a few minutes making a sample page of what you can do for them. Now don’t pressure them simply give them a cd with the page to look at with your phone number, you may be surprised that some will call you and if you can be reasonably priced for these small businesses you may just get hired.

Many of these people have business friends that may also bring you in. Granted you will put in time unpaid but nothing comes without effort
