Web Design Magazines

Same, I’m subscribed to all the SitePoint Newsletters - I admitedly don’t read them all every single time though, I have some unread newsletters in my inbox still!

I agree with you regarding print based magazines Alex, I’ve started to see a pattern in the .net magazines where the calendar for conferences and events is highly out of date by the time it comes to my door. Some news sections are also out of date and I’ve found that I’ve even read about the same thing 2 or 3 weeks prior to reading it in the print magazine.

As for Web based magazines, yup, I do know :stuck_out_tongue: - What I’d like to know is, isn’t there anymore SitePointers that read any type of Web design / development magazine out there?!

I love Web Designer magazine which is published in the UK but is available at Barnes and Noble in the US. It’s expensive but worth the price. There are always tutorials on the latest trends in web design and there is a CD included with new resources. I highly recommend it.

I read quite a few, though all are online magazines, except one print mag (Arte Magazine, German Edition). My favourites have to be ALA, [URL=“http://designobserver.com/”]Design Observer, [URL=“http://ilovetypography.com/”]ILT, and [URL=“http://www.underconsideration.com/”]Under Consideration.

I have long thought that having an actual print magazine for web dev is kind of strange. With that being said, I presently receive EContent and Website magazines. They are quite expensive but both subscriptions were comped. They are only about 50 or so pages and are a 50/50 mix of content and ads. I work and meet with clients at home so they look good on the coffee table.

Yep .net mag does it for me, informative articles most months and wasn’t that sitepoint css booklet a nice surprise

I normally just pick one up at a store to free me from my PC and to give my brain a break from all the moving text and images online!! Advertising is sometimes a bit over the top, but then they have to make their money somehow. I guess.

I’m subscribed to like 30 design blogs. I know that’s not quite the same thing but they’re free, full of useful information, and managed simply with google reader.

I have tried a free digital copy of WebDesigner Magazine I think it’s called, on my iPad. It seems pretty legit but I think it’s mostly based in europe though as everything is in pounds or euros. It is printed first then put into digital so it’s probably worth checking out.

It seems to be very good, designed well, good content pertaining to everything from HTML5 to jQuery. From what I read of the free magazine about HTML 5 they seem very credible and knowledgable. I did find a piece about an interview with a hosting company and it convinced me of their quality while also being cheaper than what I paid for but I did look up reviews and it seems to be pretty terrible. So like any magazine/media they are prone to pieces like that which probably help them make money, possibly. Anyways, I would recommend the printed version and I believe it’s a quality resource with a lot of good articles to learn from.

I’ve considered buying the printed copy subscription myself as the digital one seems to crash a lot. Instead of just putting their printed copy into a digital file they should just adapt it to a model that works well with the iPad and doesn’t require so much scrolling. But that’s neither here or there.

I used to subscribe to .net magazine, but I find that resources like SitePoint and SmashingMagazine are fair better these days.

I personally don’t subscribe to any magazines. If I see an interesting cover, yes I’m a fool for beautiful & interesting covers, in a bookshop/store I might just purchase it. I enjoy Web Designer Magazine, Computer Arts and Photoshop Creative.

I subscribe to web designer magazine.

Pros:

  • Can read it on the train, on the toilet, in bed anywhere with light without the need for a laptop etc
  • Usually has pretty good and relevant tutorials
  • Can claim the cost back on tax (if you are working as a web designer / publisher / developer I guess)

Cons:

  • The recurring gallery article ALWAYS features hi res very basic “whole website is one image” sites, I’m guessing because these look better in print
  • The cost ($18AU for me at my local newsagent)
  • Filled with ads (from the UK even)

Well, those are the tools that most of the professional use, so I’m not surprised if they dedicate quite a bit of time to them. It happens with most of the magazines

I used to buy .NET regularly but got fed up with the biased towards Adobe products, it seemed just about every tutorial was based on Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Flash.

Dijup: you’ll want the digital ones then. You live pretty far away from some of the bigger printers…
or see if there’s a printer in India, which wouldn’t be so far away to ship.

I wander over to Smashing every now and then… I look for Chris Heilmann JS articles, they are excellent. I sometimes read something from AListApart, but it’s usually an old article. I used to read 456bereastreet, but frankly, the comments were as much worth as the articles, and when Roger had to remove commenting because he couldn’t keep up with the spam, it made less sense to go there. Damn spammers, die die die.

Web Design Magazine is translated into Dutch and I can get it at a local bookstore where I live, but usually I don’t get it. I’ve bought maybe two… they focused a lot on the Pretty (Photoshop techniques, hot trendy web3.0 stuff), which I ignore. There’s a big push to using DW for everything. So, if I’m in that bookstore, I’ll flip through it. One had a disk with free stockfotos, which was cool : )

If they won’t send you the magazines, you’ll just have to read the online version: http://www.netmag.co.uk/

.NET do claim they have subscriptions to “Rest of the World” for GBP 85.

Which may or may not include Nepal, assuming your mail service is reliable.

I am from Nepal and I tried to subscribe many design related magazines but was not able to do so.

Is there any solutions for me

I buy .net and have for several years. I like it. Occasionally I’ll pick up Web Design. Prefer .net.

I live in Ireland and get the UK version as soon as it hits the stands. i do not subscribe because they classify Ireland as Europe and the postal rate is too expensive. I’m only 30miles from the ROI/NI border. Cheaper to buy at ASDA.

I don’t really read print magazines and in my experience, all of them are costly and are filled with advertisements (just to make them profitable). I used to subscribe to PC Pro magazine but unfortunately it came to a point where even with a subscription (I got it a month before it hit the shelves), by the time it appeared on my door… most of the news was seriously out of date. So I gave up reading print media because it’s just far too slow and costly for what you get in return.

As for web based magazines, you know I read them, heck I’ve written for a couple of them!
