I’m really curious about the content development side of the web because lately I haven’t found any opportunities for web design, application programming or Flash programming. Here are a few exploratory questions:

What are a few ways that e-marketing or social media can be applied to a variety of businesses, from retail to warehouse shipping or even real estate?
How can I find out about the turnover rate for both career paths?
And for web designers who are interested in transitioning to marketing, what can they do to learn about market research and other topics?
Finally, can anyone recommend magazines or blogs that focus directly on the social media/e-commerce industry? I’m currently following Mashable.

In my last year at college, I interned at a broadcast station as a web editor. I didn’t do much, because we were using Joomla and Ning to facilitate content updating. There was minimal web design involved, which led me to realize that I shouldn’t rely on only web development as a solid career path.
