VUVUZELAS -- love 'em or hate 'em?

at first they prompted a negative reaction, but having heard them for a few days now, i really like them

by the way, these horns are also common in the cfl (canadian football league) – aaaaaaaaargooooooooooooos!!!

They’re annoying and another barrier to getting North Americans interested in soccer (you heard me! I called it soccer!).

Few casual fans would watch a game with that level of annoying noise, as many have said on radio and TV in Canada it’s like listening to a swarm of bees being run through a blender for hours.

If this catches on I want to start a company that creates software to filter out that noise and sell it to the major tv networks. It would easily be worth millions if not tens of millions.

As far as the CFL comment goes, you’ll have a few dozen or hundred of those things at a stadium but nobody is blowing it for the entire game. If someone did they would get punched in the face damned quick.

Argh even just thinking about that noise is giving me a headache.

I reckon we will be seeing them at sporting events soon, here in the uk, i just searched for “vuvuzela” on the UK ebay and it came back with 1,368 matches.

I think I love them !

They don’t bother me at all, never did. All that whining about them is what’s annoying. Wusses. :stuck_out_tongue:

I am not a soccer, football, futbol…etc fan. I never have been… but I will admit that for some reason, (maybe the drone of the vuvuzela? maybe it’s the new hi-def tv?) this year I cannot get enough of the world cup!! I’ve been watching every game I can find.

I personally think the vuvuzeala’s are great, of course they were a bit obnoxious at first, but I think it’s a great way for the fans to show their support. Let’s face it, it’s better than them yelling obscenities ALL the time.

Overall it’s some of the most competitive professional athletes I’ve seen in a while. You rarely see players in US professional sports put forth as much effort and heart as the guys on the World Cup fields. Lots of emotion, maybe a little too much drama, and some GREAT action!!

I’m Rusty, and I’m newly addicted to World Cup Football.

Wah? Wassat? Huh? Can’t hear you over the noise of those damn things…

Agreed with you ScallioXTX. They just seem to be blowing it for the fun of it rather than doing it for a reason.

I said this to my brother on the first match we watched. It sounds like a huge swarm of bees.

I hated them at first but they’ve slowly been calming down to a tolerable level where I really don’t mind. Or maybe my ears have had so much of it that it has affected my hearing!

Andrew Cooper

I dont think you could ban them, they are the ‘sound’ of the African World Cup!
Its part of the culture and would be akin to banning bagpipes in Scotland or maracas in Spain!

The BBC are looking at ways of filtering the audio and subduing the specific range that the vuvu’s buzz at. Could be interesting to see what happens.

I watch Football on German TV, so my commentators are different. Don’t even know how one can watch on the net. Don’t have a TV card.

I mean the poor quality of play.

I know that the qualifying rounds are often a bit less energetic, so I shouldn’t be complaining.

But what Italy presented yesterday requires HUGE love for the sport to not sustain severe brain damaage during those 90 minutes.

I’m with Rudy. The first days were hell! But now I’m getting used to them. They don’t bother me all that much anymore.

What does bother me much more now, are the really horrid, ghastly performances by some teams.

Sheesh.

Just finished watching New Zealand vs. Slovakia. God, what a waste of time. I’m happy for NZ’s goal in the last few seconds though!

you mean the flopping and diving, or the poor level of play?

remember, these teams all won qualifying rounds

p.s. the commentator i thought was brilliant is named john helm

the fans in the new zealand slovakia game are more subdued than other matches, but they have learned to toot in unison… imagine what that’s going to sound like when the fans at the bigger matches pick up the habit

the commentator of the new zealand slovakia game that i’m watching is outstanding and one of a very rare breed – he speaks in actual complete sentences, with clauses and everything

What do you mean with normal? In South Africa, this IS normal.

Hate 'm. For me part of the whole soccer experience is the way the public reacts to what’s happening on the field. That is, when your team scores, cheer, when the opposing teams kicks one of “your” players, boo, etc.
Right now the rule seems to be, whatever happens, blow your vuvuzela.
It takes away all the emotion from the game.
If they were only to use those things when your own team scored I’m all for them, but the way they’re being used now is starting to annoy the crap out of me.

Hate them, do my head in with the constant buzzing.

I’ll just add it to the long list of moronic behviour exhibited by football fans, and that includes paying good money to watch the best players in the world falling over at every opportunity to win free kicks and penalties when they could be showing us football at the highest standard possible.

Compare the world cup hystrionics and bad sportsmenship to the professional standard displayed during the Olympic Ice Hockey…

i like them, they are cool

They’re driving me nuts, and I’m sitting in my living room. Poor *******s that actually go to the stadium…
I wish they could filter out the vuvuzela noise.

They are annoying, they’re drowning out the normal atmosphere of the games, I wish the broadcasters could either turn down the volume of the feeds from the pitch-side microphones or turn up the volume of the sound feed from the commentary box.
