/var/lib/mysql is too full!

my website was down with “failed to connect to database” as error message.

After logging into the server and trying to restart mysql (sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart), I ran into this problem:

/etc/init.d/mysql: ERROR: The partition with /var/lib/mysql is too full! failed!

Does the drive/partition which mysql is installed on have any free disk space?

If your error log files (mysql, etc) are also stored on the same drive/partition copy the contents of them to your local machine and then empty the log files that are stored on the server
