Upgrading Wordpress Version

Our company blog is using a very old wordpress version - WordPress 2.8.4. The latest version is now WordPress 3.0.4

Can I upgrade automatically, without any loss? ( content, etc) I’ve been wanting to for a long time but I’m bit hesitant to mess things up. Would exporting the XML be enough as a backup?

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

Back everything up including content, databases and files. If you can login to your mysql database admin, do that and make a backup of the wordpress database.

Then, log into your web server and download your wordpress site files.

Save both of these in a safe place just in case.

One final thing, is your company okay with updating? Any downtime would be bad for business, and a lot of business minded people (no offense) seem to have a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” attitude towards things.
