Unsafe https

Hello

I’m not sure whether this is the correct forum section to post this. I also have it under web security… but…

I work for a business who own a website www.bbh.co.nz.

We were looking for a hostel that subscribes to us and found a dodgey looking link in the google search and wondered whether you could enlighten us as to what it may possibly be…

Here’s the process we followed to get it. We typed a search for “vagabond backpackers” and got this in the Google Search:

BBH World travellers Accommodation New Zealand - BBH Listings … View Guest Reviews Make a Rating Information on Ratings. Location Map. Click here to view Google map. Map - Vagabond Backpackers … https://bbh.co.nz/bbh_HostelSearch.a...etail&HostelID… - Cached

The link should actually point to http://www.bbh.co.nz/bbh_HostelSearc...l&HostelID=159.

We do have https on our administration part of the site but it is a separate and secure section to the front end.

The webpage of the hostel in question is www.vagabondbackpackers.co.nz which seems to be a secure site for some odd reason and not sure why this is.

Can anyone enlighten us as to what is happening with links and the google search function in the process?

Do you think it could be a hack?

Thanks very much

Feliciaf,

PLEASE do NOT double post! Moderators can move posts to the proper section if it’s posted in error.

  1. I doubt it’s a hack. It’s more like “cowboys” (incompetents who advertise themselves as experts) at work - typical here in NZ!

  2. It’s NOT Google’s problem. YOU have a problem with your client (Vagabond). Tell them to link properly because their link goes to a 404 (and does them no good at all.

  3. If YOU benefit from the link, you can redirect FROM the errant link to the correct link with a mod_alias Redirect (unless the “truncated” link used a query string in which case a mod_rewrite RewriteCond with RewriteRule could be used.

Don’t you just love all the “cowboys” here?

Regards,

DK
