Is there some way that I could turn my laptop (MacBook Pro) into a mobile telephone?
I don’t own a cell phone and can’t stand them - they make people crazy!!! 
But since I travel so much, it would be nice to make or receive phone calls when I am in my car (parked in a safe place) or at McDonalds or at the park!
Is this possible?
(I thought that VOIP let you do that kind of stuff…)

Skype may well suit your requirements because it has sophisticated telephone routing.

What immediately sprang to mind was the local pawnshop where you could sell your MacBook Pro and buy a mobile

How does the call quality compare to a cellphone? To a land-line?
And what about privacy and security?
Do I have to worry about being hacked or getting malware?
And what about the NSA? 
Why, you wanna swap my new MBP for your cellphone? 
Nah, I’ll pass. The whole reason for this thread is that cellphones make me feel dirty YUCK!!!
But if I could make and receive phone calls via my MBP, then I wouldn’t feel bad. (Hey, it’s just my quirk!)

There are so many factors to take into consideration that it is impossible to pass comment.
Open a Skype account and setup some credit, call your friends and family and let us know if they can spot the difference.

Same as any telephone I should imagine so be careful.

Personally not affected so have not followed the developments.

Once had 8 fraudulent calls (23.30 GBP) when someone hacked my account , since changed password and not had further problems. It was more than a coincidence that it was immediately after having the computer repaired locally.
