Looking for some software to create a travel portal - community style site, where users can create a profile, upload stories, photos, create maps etc.
Have looked through wordpress and some other systems with no luck.

Have you had a look at Travlrz? (www.travlrz.com) It might not fit your needs 100% but maybe a step in your direction for travel related sites - especially if you want to list packages and let users collaborate around it. Another option for me would be to do something with Joomla and custom extensions.
