Tools for designing Android App?

OK, I need to do a design for one Android app now.

I can use both Photoshop and Illustrator. No Sketch. I am on Windows.

Resolution doesn’t matters as I have read… So I will take 72 in Photoshop or Illustrator.

1) My question atm is what size to take at the very start. For Photoshop what size to take and for Illustrator what size to take.

2) After that how to convert that design to LDPI, MDPI, XDPI and bla bla bla both for Photoshop and Illustrator? Any Scripts?

Thank you

There’s a school of thought that tools like Ps (for image editing etc.) are inappropriate for website/app design in a browser or on a device, as they are totally different media with different purposes.

For websites, I prefer to design in the browser—and that would be my preference for apps, too, if I worked with them.

Hi Ralph, yup I agree but I can’t use Sketch. Can’t spend 99$ now. Also I am on Win. I am more leaning towards Illustrator but its a bit tough to slice individual assets and export them in Illustrator. So for the time being I am sticking with PS.

Haha, no you don’t. You went straight back to talking about using Ps. You can do anything with HTML and CSS—including making individual assets. It’s much more satisfying and efficient to work in the medium that you’ll eventually be using—at least for me.

Didn’t you read why I am using Photoshop?

You’re saying Photoshop is an Android app?

Do people still do that?

I don’t do mobile apps, only websites, but I just use PS for editing photos, re-touching, re-sizing, colour grading, optimising, etc.
I use illustrator for creating web graphics, as in icons and the like, so they can be output as SVG. I did used to use PS for that, saving PNGs, but I favour SVG these days, slimmer and scalable.
