I had been working for a company for nearly 2 years now. and i had struggling time, arguing with ignorant colleagues who don’t know much about markup. validation and browser compatibility issues and end up having issues with me. recently i asked my Manager to have my room changed and he said give me some time and after a month i went to talk to him and he said. no u can’t have it and when i tried to explain him. he said ‘please!’ so i walked out. now he has been given the impresson by my clever colleagues that i am dumb/under skilled and stuff and now i can clearly see he can see it through. whereas those people only know programming language and nothing else.
i also came to know that the people which came after me will be getting 25% raise and i m getting just b.w 3-5%. having so much on my mind. i am confused on what is the right option. talk time is over. the manager said it he don’t wanna talk over my issues. my colleagues won’t listen to me. rather make fun of me. the only thing that stopping me is the monthly pay i get and honestly now i lost interest in earning money without respect. what do u guys think should i do?
It’s time to prove your self.
as in?
I guess you should just try to do your work well, and if it’s not appreciated, or if you are not paid properly, seek another position.
When you say quit? Quit working and never work or quit in your current job?
I’d quit in your current job, look asap try to assess your current situation if what job is suited for you. If you got the same position in another company it may reoccur again. hth:)
quit as in current job
Current position you’re in is pretty horrible… Of course, this was only one sided story so I don’t know who is right or wrong. In a bad argument, everyone thinks they are right and everyone else is wrong. I’d say quit your job if you’re losing sleep over it. If not, I start looking and just do as you were told. Don’t try to be a rebel and smile when you talk to them next time. The last thing you want to do is to leave the company in a bad note. After all, you’ll put reference to this company in your regime. That’s all I can say.
Start looking for a better place. I agree with sg707, though I personally believe you should stand up for yourself and not take any crap from your coworkers.
I second that
Quitting is not an option because, they don’t even care for you and they even celebrate once you quit.
so, i would better prove myself and take smiles off their ugly faces by not giving them a chance to smile …
Quitting is very easy but proving yourself is very hard and requires a lot of hard work + motivation, i am just giving you the later one
Hope you understand what i am trying to explain
in my case my boss seem to be getting other colleagues ideas which are just lame and he ignore my saying/problem solution. for the time being my colleague pull it off excellently i.e playing it quick and showing me dumb but in office when i got in a argument with a guy on his his statements. i got reply that “i am a layman, ur expert in ur field”. and my boss wants me to put a elephant in a basket just coz he likes it. i say its stupid and i think u can’t do anything about a ignorant person. quitting seem the only option. i just hope i get a new one!
So far we’ve heard that your colleagues are ignorant and you manager doesn’t seem to ‘get’ that. There must be another side to this.
What drives your manager to make these decisions? What is the context? Is the business successful/growing and are you the only person who is dissatisfied in this way?
no my colleagues are clever+ignorant.my manager doesn’t seem to get me. as i my colleagues taunt/angry about that i am under skilled or stuff. they r bunch of kids wirth attitude. and boss has been convinced by them that yes i m under skilled. whereas i was the one who took idea from piece of paper n design the layout.foundation n what not to make a web app suite which sells for billion. from the way i noticed my boss. he takes me for granted, whereas much of things rely on me as i initiate and other follow. sometimes money is important in life but i guess understanding and listening to a person is more. what is good is money if u get kick everyday
So, let’s review:
- your manager doesn’t get you
- your colleagues are a bunch of kids with attitude
- boss convinced by the kids with attitude that you are underskilled
- you took an idea and helped it become a billion dollar sale
- your boss takes you for granted
- you initiate and others follow
- you value understanding and listening more than money
And here are some observations of my own:
- you say your colleagues are ‘kids’ but based on the way you write you seem like a kid yourself
- you didn’t really ‘listen’ to me by answering the questions in my post
- your posts exclusively blame others for your issues, which makes it hard to imagine that this is the ‘whole’ story.
I wonder, what kind of employee you really are and if you are sharing a true perspective of what is going on. Listening goes both ways - what you are hearing and seeing around you?
sharing with world and asking their input on it. its not like i m leaking company secrets out u got some facts wrong.
those guys with attitude, are of clever nature i.e they don’t know much but try to scold other. yesterday i came know about a colleague who is short tempered and didn’t know what is pixel. and when i got pissed off much. he replied me “we are layman”, as ur friend u know better. he admitted he bluff n over react infront of boss and so did other colleague. i do lack expression and communication power in me i know
how do you think your boss would describe this same situation?
how large is this company you work for?
what would you like to see happen?
are you a native english speaker?
do you think you are paid well?
can you answer these questions directly rather than vaguely?
Problem for nofel is that he’s taking it too personally. Yes, I’m also passionate about what I do but not everything goes my way. I do speak to oppose some ideas at a specific time where I have the opportunity. However, once you made your points and your boss made a decision then you should follow their orders. For me, working w/ guys who is disgruntle because their idea got shot down and complaining all day…I will slowly creep away from them and side w/ co-worker who works as a team. Next time, if you need to make a point and you already sense that they’ll disagree then put more effort by creating a demo or power point slides.
I was in a similar situation a few years ago and I left for another position. My biggest regret was, I didn’t leave sooner. I tried to stick it out and make it work, but I would have been better off if I’d left sooner.
I would recommend leaving.
p.s i quiited my job couple of days back. I gave my reason for it was discrimination and rudeness. And my boss accepted it without asking why. It’s lame that u work in a corporation and u made something that earns them million n they won’t solve ur issue.
I think you’ve “resolved” this issue in the worst way possible, in such a way that it’s going to harm your career development far more than staying in your job would have.
You’ve worked at this company for two years, and you state that your arguments stem from petty things such as mark-up, validity, etc. Sadly, in most companies this simply isn’t an issue and most bosses couldn’t give a damn about it. Software is a key part of their business and they’d rather have a developer working on products than spending time on tasks like validation when it won’t bring any quantifiable benefit to them.
By citing “discrimination and rudeness” as your reasons for leaving you’ve ruined your chances for a good reference from them, and after spending two years at said company any future employer of yours will likely contact your old boss and receive a damning review of you as an employee there. Future employers could see you as a high-risk hire in this current climate and it will undoubtedly result in a few “no hire” results from interviewers.
Secondly, you state that you didn’t land your 25% raise, but received a 3-5% raise. We’re in financially tough times and in all honestly it doesn’t shock me that you weren’t offered a raise because few people are getting them without having to take on substantially more work to keep hiring costs down. The sad truth is that the managers will help dictate pay, and he/she clearly believed that you weren’t the most qualified person to get the extra responsibility that would come with a raise. It’s quite natural for programmers to achieve pay rises over designers because in the long-term a programmer can be quite valuable to a company and good programmers are immensely hard to replace well. After some interest from a rival software company I negotiated a decent raise, but only because I was the only person qualified to handle our work. The sad fact is that to get a raise in this current climate you have to make yourself valuable enough that work would grind to a halt without you.
This probably isn’t the best way to go about your working life, but I tend to believe that even those who are clearly less capable than me technically still have valuable input to give, and that things that I may consider to be wrong can often turn out to be right. Unless you’re a world-renowned expert in your field you’ll not know a LOT about Web Design/Development, and the input of anyone with a scrap of knowledge is like gold to you, because it will lead you to your answer. The other day a fellow employee at work who has never heard of C# pointed out something that led me to fix a lambda expression I had been struggling with for ages. I’ve also had non-technical managers look over my code and make comments like “well, what if that value isn’t present?” that have made me realise that I need to catch certain exceptions.
If I were you, I would work on your CV and try and find yourself a full-time permanent role in a company as quickly as possible. Good luck.
That’s the way of other corporation they think less of your work in the mean of effort…You work hard from them with your best but speechless if you quit…
