The fold. Are people scrolling?

I’m deciding whether to go for a 2 columns vertically longer style design or 3 column to bring more info to the top.

Upon research it seems the jury is still out on whether most people are scrolling or not.

What do you guys reckon?

i can speak only for myself, and whether or not i scroll depends entirely on whether whatever’s above the fold is crap or not

Rudy’s got it right. I think the “common wisdom,” for what that’s worth, says that people are used to scrolling and won’t hesitate to do so. But if what’s above the fold is crap – loads of flashy ads make me run away faster than just about anything, for example – the average user won’t stick around long enough to scroll down.

My take is, if your site is so lame that the first thing I see are ads for other sites and other products, then why am I wasting my time? I can watch infomercials on TV and spend my time just as badly. Idiotic and badly written “content” is just as bad.

Like the others have said, give them a reason to scroll and they’ll scroll.

Quoted for epic truth. I’ll scroll forever if your site is useful/interesting/beautiful/etc, and that link you posted suggests most people are happy to do the same.

Matrixy: there is no fold…

*edit decided to remove the image cause it’s hotlinking and this is SitePoint… : )

Another illustration that speaks volumes: http://www.ashtonedit.com/images/the_fold.jpg

heh lawlz Tommy I had that one and decided not to link it in case it wrecked his server or something : )

The pains of explaining that to some clients. Oy.

one of which is “i can’t spell”

Picky, picky!
And you mis-spelled ‘I’. :stuck_out_tongue:

no i did not

but you misspelled “misspelled”

:stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been taught that it’s always spelled with a capital ‘I’.

I know, but I’m a bleedin’ foreigner. What’s your excuse? :stuck_out_tongue:

don’t need an excuse

do a search for capitalization, orthography, and artistic licence

Sorry mate, but I don’t accept that since it’s a cop-out that can be used to excuse virtually any behaviour.

The person who created the image where you found the misspelling was perhaps also using his or her ‘artistic licence’.

I know, but I’m a bleedin’ foreigner. What’s your excuse?

He’s Canadian.

i don’t think so, tommy

far more believable is that the person simply cannot spell

why are you so picky picky? that wasn’t your page, was it?

Unlike you?

Nope. Just whiling away a boring afternoon at the office, making having some fun with a respected friend.

that is correct

that person cannot spell, unlike me

i can spell
