Syntax foreign to me

I have the files form a MicRecorder project from Bytearray.org. My question is in this HTML file (attached) what are the many uses of ${“something”} meaning? For example line 37 has the code

var swfVersionStr = “${version_major}.${version_minor}.${version_revision}”;

I this this some kind of placehodler. I see the page title also uses it not inside a script tag. Thanks
