Stuck in Build Your Own Web Site, chapter 3

I am trying to learn web site building with Ian Lloyd’s Build Your Own Web Site the Right Way using HTML & CSS, version 1. I’ve managed to get through to page 95 in chapter three with what I thought were no mistakes. But, in trying to add a font change in the CSS to the tagline paragraph I’ve managed to change the font in all the paragraphs on all pages. Everything with a p is changed, instead of just the p in the tagline. Obviously I’ve made a mistake somewhere, but for the life of me I can’t tell where. I’ve printed out the example code of both the page source code and the style1.css and compared them to my pages and can’t find anything that doesn’t match up. My first thought was that I didn’t close the div for the tagline, but they are closed with the /div>. I’ve got a mistake somewhere, can anyone tell me what to look for?
Thanks for any help I can get,
Linda, very much a newbie with all this stuff.

I am having the same problem as Linda. I have the markup written exactly the same but nothing has changed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Just as I thought I was doing something stupid. It is now working and I can move beyond this point, thank goodness.

Okay, I’ve figured out the problem I had with adding style to a specific div element. I moved on to the next exercise- grouping styles for different elements. Again I’ve written the CSS exactly as written in the book, saved, opened the webpage amd nothing has changed. This is on some header elements that I changed previously. According to the book this new change should override the previous changes, but didn’t, so I must be writing it wrong, either that, or the web browser isn’t acknowledging the style1.css file for some reason. Although that doesn’t make sense either, since I just changed some things with the previous exercise.
The first example is what I wrote in the css file, the second is what was in the book.
h1, h2, h3, {
font-family: “Trebuchet MS”, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
background-color: navy;
color: white;
}

h1, h2, h3, {
font-family: “Trebuchet MS”, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif:
background-color: navy;
color: white;
}
I’ve gone over the source code for the page, I don’t know how many times, everything looks fine. Exactly the way it is written in the example code for the page. And since previous changes to the same elements were done correctly, I can’t figure out why this change won’t take. Anyone know what I am doing wrong. This was going very nicely until I hit this section, now I can’t do anything right.

or the web browser isn’t acknowledging the style1.css file for some reason.

Sometimes you need to force the .css file to refresh. I am just getting started with CSS and some of the books I have read recommend keeping the css in the head until you have it pretty much the way you want it so you can avoid refresh issues, then move it to a separate file.

h1, h2, h3, {
font-family: “Trebuchet MS”, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif:
background-color: navy;
color: white;
}

You’ve got a colon in there after sans-serif instead of a semi-colon.

Any luck yet Linda?
