Strange whiteness in transparency gradient

I’m trying to create a gradient in my logo image behind the lettering in the attached screen shot. For some reason, when following instructions such as found here,

a whiteness is introduced into the gradient instead of the gradient going to true transparency. Any clues why, and how to prevent that?

That’s odd. Those instructions work fine for me. Make sure neither layer reads Background. If one does, double click on it and rename it.

Thanks Ralph. It looks like the layer with the clipping mask is reading foreground. And I don’t see any way of setting the foreground to transparency. Just a color.

BTW, I renamed, and then deleted and re-created the top layer.

Turns out all I had to do was erase the white over the transparency part. All set now. Thanks for your help.
