Strange IP address

Hi I am in Andorra and when I google for my IP online it showed one that various sites place in Russia. I found since that the Ip address I get from the ISP gets changed into another by the Netgear router. But Russia?

However, afurther test in http://whatismyipaddress.com/ does place the IP where I am, in Andorra.

The Ip address I get online is 91.187.66.xxx

I can’t understand what is going on and wonder if I am being hacked!

Your router manages your network, while doing this is create a local network that you use for any devices connected either by cable or wifi. This network is normally using 192.168.x.x. or 10.0.x.x though your could use another setup.

This means that your devices, has to connect through the router to get access to internet, this is when it get access to the correct IP address you received from your ISP. I.e. 91.187. etc.

So from what you said, it sounds like your local network behave the way it should.

Note. My explanation above is simplified, to make it easier to follow/understand. If you want to learn more about this you can take a look on routing and TCP/IP

Hi

Many thanks for the explanation but I am still confused as to why if I test my IP address online I get 91.187.xxx.xxx. If I disconnect the computer from the router and plug it straight into the ISP box I get 85.94.xxx.xxx

Apparently they both are from Andorra, but what is my IP address?.. Which one? This all started with trying to block ghost visitors appearing in my Google analytics and then deciding that the best was to “include” my own ip address and nothing else. I placed the one I get through the router and it seems to be working, but why isn’t the one through the router 192.168. x.x. ?

I’m not quite sure I understand your question. Are you saying your IP address should be static, but is showing up as different things, or do you have a dynamic IP address?

Hi TecnnoBear

I have a dinamic IP address. However I have two porblems: first why is the router address not only different from the ISP one, but why is it not 192,168,xx,xx?

The, and perhaps more to the point, is the router address static, even if the ISP one is dinamic? What should I put in the GA to “include”?
